Bhai Dooj, celebrated two days after Diwali, is a special Hindu festival that honors the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters pray for the well-being, health, and prosperity of their brothers, while brothers vow to protect and care for their sisters. This celebration symbolizes the love, care, and lifelong bond shared by siblings and strengthens familial ties.
Rooted in several Hindu tales, Bhai Dooj most famously relates to the narrative of Yamraj, the god of death, and his sister Yamuna. Yamraj allegedly visited his sister on this day, who greeted him with chocolates and dabbed a ceremonial tilak on his forehead. Yamraj promised her safety in exchange, therefore bestowing blessings. Bhai Dooj has become observed as a day when brothers and sisters show their love and affection for one another since then.
Another narrative connected to Bhai Dooj is one about Lord Krishna and his sister Subhadra. Following his triumph over the demon Narakasura, Krishna visited his sister Subhadra, who greeted him kindly, laid a tilak on his forehead, and prayed for his health. This occasion is supposed to have motivated the Bhai Dooj custom.
Bhai Dooj is observed in somewhat varied ways around India. While in West Bengal it is named Bhai Phonta, in Maharashtra it is known as Bhau Beej. The basic feeling is the same despite geographical variations: honoring the close relationship between brothers and sisters.
Rituals and Tilak Ceremony:
Sisters perform a ritual where they apply a tilak (sacred mark) on their brothers’ foreheads, offer prayers for their long life, and perform an aarti (ceremonial light). In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters and promise to protect them.
Feasts and Sweets:
Families gather to enjoy delicious meals, and traditional sweets are exchanged between siblings as a token of love and celebration.
Gifts and Blessings:
Sisters often receive gifts from their brothers as a sign of appreciation and love. These gifts can range from sweets to personalized items that symbolize the strong bond they share.
