Chandra Shekhar Azad Jayanti, celebrated annually on July 23, honours one of the most fearless and pivotal figures in India’s struggle for independence. Chandra Shekhar Azad was a revolutionary whose commitment to the freedom movement was marked by his profound bravery and unwavering spirit. This day is a tribute to his life and legacy, inspiring generations to uphold the values of courage, freedom, and determination in the face of adversity.
Chandra Shekhar Azad, born on July 23, 1906, in the village of Bhavra, Madhya Pradesh, was early drawn to the Indian freedom struggle. His lifetime dedication to the cause started when he was a teenage member of the Non-Cooperation Movement. Azad grew more disappointed with the nonviolent method after the non-cooperation campaign was suspended during the Chauri Chaura event and turned towards more forceful kinds of opposition.
With an eye towards making India an independent republic, Azad was instrumental in reorganising the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) and turning it into the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). Among the major incidents of the Indian independence struggle he participated in were the Kakori Train Robbery, the attempt to blow up the Viceroy’s train, and the 1928 killing of J.P. Saunders at Lahore in order of vengeance for Lala Lajpat Rai’s murder.
Resolved to never be taken prisoner by the British police, Chandra Shekhar Azad chose to shoot himself rather than be taken prisoner at Alfred Park, Allahabad, on February 27, 1931. His martyrdom, which stands for the greatest sacrifice for the liberation of India, has permanently changed the historical awareness of the country.
