Chhath Puja is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (the Goddess of Well-Being). Celebrated mainly in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as in Nepal, this four-day festival is marked by fasting, prayers, and offering thanks to the Sun God for sustaining life on earth and granting health and prosperity. Devotees gather by rivers and water bodies to offer their prayers during sunrise and sunset.
Starting in early Vedic times, Chhath Puja is among the first celebrations in Indian tradition. Both the Rigveda and the Mahabharata have reference to the celebration. Mythological accounts hold that Karna, the son of Surya, carried out this custom, so he acquired great power and fame. The roots of the celebration are very closely related to nature worship, most especially to the solar deity.
Another myth connected to Chhath Puja centers on Draupadi and the Pandavas derived from the Mahabharata. They said they underwent Chhath Puja to get Sun God blessings and conquer trying circumstances. By means of their worship, they recovered their lost kingdom, therefore attesting to the Sun God’s ability to grant success and wealth.
Chhath Puja is special in its relationship with the surroundings. The ceremonies center on preserving simplicity and purity; no idols are revered. Praying for the setting and rising sun, devotees show thanks for the power keeping all life alive. With ceremonies carried out in natural locations such as rivers, ponds, and lakes, the event also stresses environmental protection.
Fasting and Offering Arghya:
Devotees, especially women, observe rigorous fasting during Chhath Puja. The main ritual involves offering Arghya (water offerings) to the Sun God at both sunrise and sunset. This is done by standing in water, typically a river or pond, while chanting prayers.
Prayers to Chhathi Maiya:
On the final day of the festival, prayers are offered to Chhathi Maiya for the well-being and prosperity of the family. Devotees prepare traditional offerings like thekua (a sweet dish made of wheat flour, jaggery, and ghee) and fruits.
Environmental Awareness:
Many people use eco-friendly items like earthen lamps and biodegradable offerings during Chhath Puja. The festival encourages respect for nature and water conservation, as rituals are performed by natural water bodies.
