Among Shakti’s most important days of celebration during Navratri is Durga Ashtami. Celebrated in her Mahagauri avatar, the goddess is revered on this day for purity and peace. In some areas of India, the day is also commemorated as Astra Puja, in which the weapons of the goddess are revered to honor her function as the defender of righteousness.
In West Bengal, where it forms part of the complex Durga Puja celebrations, Durga Ashtami is especially magnificent. Pandals, or temporary constructions, are visited by thousands of followers to pray; cultural events run all day. Special ceremonies, including Kumari Puja, in which young girls revered for their purity represent the deity, also take place today.
