HISTORY OF GAURI VRAT
Gauri Vrat is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and revolves around the devotion of Goddess Parvati. According to the legends, Parvati, in her quest to have Lord Shiva as her husband, underwent a rigorous penance during these days. The vrat signifies the determination and devoutness of Parvati, who observed the fast and followed strict rituals to win Shiva’s affection and ultimately, his acceptance for marriage.
This festival is especially significant for young girls, as it is believed to bless them with a husband as virtuous as Lord Shiva. Moreover, Gauri Vrat, also known as Morakat Vrat or Jayaparvati Vrat, involves worshipping the ‘jyot’ or holy flame, which symbolizes the divine light that keeps darkness and negativity at bay, much like the light of wisdom and patience that Goddess Parvati epitomized.
Gauri Vrat commences on the eleventh day of the waxing moon of Ashadha and concludes on the full moon day. During this period, the participants engage in fasting, prayer, and the narration of stories related to Parvati’s dedication and the power of devotion. The ritual underscores the cultural emphasis on virtue, the sanctity of marriage, and the strength of purpose shown by young girls in pursuit of their heartfelt desires.
HOW TO CELEBRATE GAURI VRAT
Preparations:
Before the vrat starts, participants clean their homes and create a sacred space for worship. They decorate their houses with flowers and rangoli (a decorative design made on the floor using colored powders).
Fasting:
The girls observing the vrat abstain from eating wheat, pulses, and salt for five days. They consume a special diet known as ‘sathvo’ which is made from fruits, vegetables, and nuts. The fast is broken on the fifth day with a special meal prepared as part of the rituals.
Pooja and Rituals:
Each morning, girls perform a pooja (prayer ritual) dedicated to Goddess Parvati. They light a specific lamp which should remain lit for five days and nights. This lamp is an integral part of the vrat and symbolizes constant vigilance, purity, and the spiritual flame.
