Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut, is celebrated the day after Diwali. It commemorates the lifting of Govardhan Hill by Lord Krishna to protect the people of Vrindavan from torrential rains caused by Lord Indra. Govardhan Puja symbolizes the importance of nature, humility, and devotion. Devotees worship Lord Krishna and Govardhan Hill with offerings of food, sweets, and prayers to show gratitude for nature’s blessings.
Hindu mythology holds that the residents of Vrindavan would yearly show extravagant devotion to Lord Indra, the deity of rain, asking for his blessings on an abundant crop. Young Krishna, however, questioned this custom and counseled the people to honor Govardhan Hill, which would supply food, drink, and cover. This infuriated Indra, who poured torrents of rain over the community.
Krishna raised the great Govardhan Hill on his little finger in response to Indra’s wrath, giving the people and animals of Vrindavan cover. This deed made Indra humble and helped him to see his foolishness in his arrogance. Krishna’s triumph over Indra emphasizes the need for loyalty, humility, and preservation of the earth.
Annakut is “mountain of food.” After the rain stopped, the people allegedly got ready for a big feast and presented it to Krishna and Govardhan Hill in thanksfulness. Devotees of this custom still provide large food offerings at Govardhan Puja.
Govardhan Puja:
Using cow dung or mud, devotees replicate Govardhan Hill, therefore representing the original hill raised by Krishna. The hill is ornamented with flowers and prayers directed at Lord Krishna’s protection and blessings.
Prepare Annakut:
Families set out a range of vegetarian foods and desserts on this day. Krishna is presented the food, then later shared among neighbors and family members.
Visit Temples:
Temples dedicated to Lord Krishna are beautifully decorated on Govardhan Puja. Devotees visit these temples to offer prayers, participate in kirtans (devotional singing), and celebrate the day with great joy.
