Celebrated mostly in Northern India, Hariyali Teej is a major celebration for married women and those soon to get married. Usually in July or August, this celebration takes place during the monsoon season when the surroundings explode in brilliant tones of green. It honors the holy marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, therefore signifying marital peace and wealth. Women pray for the welfare of their family, wear green saris and jewels to reflect the lushness of nature, and engage in joyful rites to rejuvenate their relationships.
Hindu mythology forms the foundation of Hariyali Teej really strongly. Goddess Parvati allegedly went through a strict penance to capture Lord Shiva’s passion and heart. On this day Shiva chose her as his wife, her loyalty and consistency at last paid off. Celebrated yearly as Hariyali Teej, their marriage represents the perfect married bond.
Hariyali Teej has developed over millennia into a celebration of fertility and rebirth in addition to honoring Shiva and Parvati’s marriage. Particularly amongst the states of Rajasistan, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, the celebration highlights the vegetation of the monsoon season and combines local customs and traditions that vary greatly over different areas.
Although the central focus of honoring marriage fidelity and the wealth of one’s partner and family stays the same, the customs and ceremonies followed during Hariyali Teej could change. For example, while the celebration is observed as a public holiday in Haryana, stressing its importance in local culture, in Rajasthan the festival involves swings suspended from trees, signifying the joy and playfulness of the season.
Dressing Up:
Women dress in green clothes and adorn themselves with gold jewelry and henna-decorated hands. Wearing green symbolizes the growth and vitality of nature during the monsoon.
Fasting:
Many married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the long life and prosperity of their husbands. The fast is broken after sighting and worshiping the moon.
Swing Rituals:
Swings are set up in courtyards or open areas, and women, especially young girls, take turns swinging. These swings are often decorated with flowers, which add to the festive atmosphere.
