HISTORY OF KANSHI RAM JI
Kanshi Ram Ji, born on March 15, 1934, in Ropar district, Punjab, India, hailed from a family belonging to the Dalit community. His early experiences in a society where caste-based discrimination was rampant profoundly influenced his worldview and later activism. Kanshi Ram Ji completed his education with a bachelor’s degree in science and initially worked in scientific and research institutions.
Kanshi Ram Ji’s journey into social activism began in the 1960s. His encounter with the caste-based discrimination prevalent in Indian society, particularly against the Dalits, led him to delve into Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s writings. Ambedkar, a Dalit icon and architect of the Indian Constitution, inspired Kanshi Ram Ji to fight against social injustices.
In 1971, Kanshi Ram Ji founded the All India Backward (SC, ST, and OBC) and Minority Communities Employees’ Federation (BAMCEF), an organization aimed at mobilizing government employees from oppressed communities. Later, in 1981, he established the Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti (DS4), broadening his focus to include all Dalits, not just government employees.
