Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti, celebrated on October 2nd, marks the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, India’s second Prime Minister and a key figure in India’s independence movement. Known for his simplicity, humility, and strong leadership, Shastri introduced the famous slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer) to highlight the importance of both soldiers and farmers in building the nation. His contributions to India’s development and his role during the 1965 Indo-Pak War are widely remembered.
October 2, 1904, saw Lal Bahadur Shastri born in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. Shastri, raised in a small family, showed a strong love of learning and a great dedication to the ideas of self-reliance and national service. Deeply inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, he early in his life started to participate in the Indian freedom struggle, usually supporting non-cooperation campaigns against British control.
Rising through the Indian National Congress, Shastri occupied key roles, including Home Minister and Railway Minister, following India’s independence. Following the passing of Jawahralal Nehru in 1964, he became India’s second prime minister. Millions of people respected Prime Minister Shastri for his extraordinary calm and foresight in handling the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war. His catchphrase “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” captured his conviction that the agricultural community as well as the armed forces could help to shape India’s future.
Simplicity, dedication, and a strong concentration on the welfare of the common man defined Shastri’s time as Prime Minister. His programs sought to boost India’s agricultural output and encourage food production self-reliance. Though his tenure as Prime Minister was brief, generations of people have been inspired by his leadership, integrity, and nationalism.
