Mohini Ekadashi is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, celebrated with great reverence and devotion across India and among Hindu communities worldwide. Falling on the eleventh day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the lunar month of Vaishakha, Mohini Ekadashi is a day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is believed that observing a fast and engaging in prayers on this day can lead to spiritual purification and the absolution of sins, paving the way for prosperity and salvation.
The history and significance of Mohini Ekadashi are rooted in ancient Hindu scriptures, particularly the Puranas. The most popular legend associated with this day is narrated in the Srimad Bhagavatam and involves the churning of the celestial ocean by the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality.
When the nectar was finally obtained, a dispute arose over its distribution. To ensure the nectar went only to the gods, Lord Vishnu took the form of an enchanting woman, Mohini, and cleverly distributed the nectar to the gods, ensuring their victory and immortality, while the demons were left empty-handed.
Another significant legend linked to Mohini Ekadashi is found in the Padma Purana, which narrates the story of a wealthy but distressed man named Dhanapala, who was deeply troubled by his sinful actions. Dhanapala followed a sage’s advice and observed the Mohini Ekadashi fast with his family, which resulted in the atonement of his sins and, ultimately, salvation.
After taking a ceremonial bath, preferably in a river or other sacred body of water, the day begins with prayers and the setting of fasting intentions.
Devotees visit temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu to participate in special pujas and listen to recitations of the Vrat Katha, the story of Mohini Ekadashi.
Giving alms, donating food, and helping the less fortunate are significant aspects of the day’s observances, embodying the spirit of compassion and generosity.
