National Law Day, also known as Constitution Day, is celebrated on November 26th every year in India. This day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949, a historic milestone that laid the foundation for the country’s democratic system. National Law Day is a reminder of the values enshrined in the Constitution, such as equality, justice, and freedom, and honors the contribution of the Constituent Assembly in drafting the supreme law of the land.
India started the process of writing a Constitution to direct national governance following its 1947 freedom. The Constituent Assembly worked under the direction of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to complete the document about three years ago. Officially ratified on November 26, 1949, the Constitution went into force on January 26, 1950.
Often considered the Father of the Indian Constitution, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was instrumental in creating the document. Emphasizing justice and equality for all people regardless of caste, gender, or religion, his vision helped India become a democratic republic whereby every person’s fundamental rights are guaranteed by the Constitution.
First observed in 1979, National Law Day was inspired by a suggestion made by the Supreme Court Bar Association to recognize the constitutional relevance. It reminds us of the work and commitment of the Constituent Assembly members and raises awareness of the need to preserve the ideals contained in the Constitution.
Reading the Preamble:
On National Law Day, people are encouraged to read the Preamble of the Indian Constitution to remind themselves of the guiding principles of democracy, justice, liberty, and equality.
Legal Awareness Events:
Schools, colleges, and legal institutions organize seminars, debates, and discussions on the importance of the Constitution and the rights it guarantees to every citizen. Such events help spread awareness about the importance of laws in upholding democracy.
Tribute to the Framers of the Constitution:
Pay tribute to the Constituent Assembly members, especially Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, by reflecting on their contributions and learning about the drafting process that gave India a progressive and inclusive Constitution.
