Born in Varanasi on November 19, 1828, Manikarnika Tambe was nurtured in a typical Marathi Brahmin home. She learned sword fighting, horse riding, and archery and displayed leadership and bravery from a young age. She adopted Rani Laxmi Bai and married Jhansi’s Maharaja, Gangadhar Rao, at the age of fourteen.

During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Rani Laxmi Bai’s bravery became most evident. She led her troops to guard her territory following the death of her husband and the British attempt at annexation of Jhansi. She fought valiantly on the battlefield as her young boy was fastened to her back. Her well-known cry, “Main apni Jhansi nahi doongi,” (“I will not give up my Jhansi”), captures her unflinching determination.
