Considered one of the most fortunate times of the year for faithful Hindus, Shravan Maas is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar. Usually falling in July or August, this month is for honoring Lord Shiva. Devotees participate in different spiritual events to show their loyalty and ask for blessings. Shravan Maas has importance not just in religious ceremonies but also in helping one to develop a closer relationship with divine forces through prayer, meditation, and fasting.
In Hinduism, Shravan Maas is immensely mythologically and historically important. Hindu astrology names it after the star ‘Shravan,’ which governs the sky throughout this month. Traditionally, this time is celebrated since it corresponds with India’s monsoon season, which marks rebirth and purity by revitalizing the natural surroundings.
Shravan is a month especially connected with Lord Shiva. Hindu legend holds that this month the ocean (Samudra Manthan) underwent churning, and Shiva drank the deadly poison that surfaced to save the universe from ruin. Shravan Maas is particularly holy to his followers since his act of swallowing the poison during this period emphasizes his sacrificing and protective qualities.
Shravan Maas has changed throughout the centuries to incorporate several celebrations and ceremonies reflecting the cultural variety of Hinduism. Community events, colorful temple celebrations, and a general spirit of devotion and happiness permeating much of India define this month.
Pujas and fasting:
Many followers fast all month long, particularly on Mondays devoted to Lord Shiva, sometimes known as Shravan Somvar. Using holy water, milk, and honey, temples do particular pujas and abhisheks—ritual washing of the Shiva lingam.
Spiritual Meetings:
Devotees chant devotional songs and hymns honoring Lord Shiva in satsangs, bhajan sessions, and kirtans—spirual meetings.
Visiting Temples:
It is believed to be quite lucky to visit Shiva temples during Shravan Maas. Devotees present holy water, flowers, and bilva leaves to the Shiva lingam and engage in the energetic temple celebrations.
