Sital Sasthi is a revered Hindu festival primarily celebrated in the western part of Odisha, India. The festival, observed annually, marks the marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Its name comes from the combination of “Sital” (cool) and “Sasthi” (sixth), reflecting the cool sixth day of the bright fortnight in the Hindu lunar month of Jyestha.
The festival’s origins lie in the rich cultural heritage of Odisha and the widespread worship of Lord Shiva. It started as a local tradition centuries ago, gradually evolving into a grand event that attracts large gatherings.
Sital Sasthi celebrates the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, a tale deeply embedded in Hindu mythology. According to legend, the Gods, unable to bear the tyranny of the demon Tarakasura, approached Lord Shiva for help. However, Shiva was deep in meditation following the demise of his first wife, Sati. Upon learning that only a son from Shiva and Parvati could kill the demon, the Gods orchestrated their union. Hence, this festival celebrates the marriage that brought about harmony and peace.
