Yogini Ekadashi is one of the significant Ekadashi observances in the Hindu calendar, falling on the eleventh day of the waning moon in the month of Ashadha (June-July). This sacred day is dedicated to worshiping Lord Vishnu and offers a chance for spiritual renewal and the forgiveness of sins. Devotees observe this day with fasting and prayers, believing it to bring them closer to divine blessings and spiritual liberation.
The origins and significance of Yogini Ekadashi are detailed in the ancient texts, particularly in the Brahmanda Purana
, where Lord Krishna explains the merits and importance of this day to Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas. According to the scripture, observing a fast on Yogini Ekadashi helps cleanse all sins and offers the devotee a path to salvation.
The legend associated with Yogini Ekadashi tells the story of a celestial gardener named Hemamali, who served Kubera, the god of wealth. Hemamali lived in the splendid city of Alakapuri, where he was responsible for collecting flowers from the Manasarovar Lake every day and bringing them to Kubera for his daily worship of Lord Shiva.
Hemamali was deeply in love with his wife, Swarupavati, and one day, lost in thoughts of her, he neglected his duty to gather the flowers. This resulted in Kubera’s puja being delayed, for which Hemamali was cursed by Kubera to suffer from leprosy and was banished from Alakapuri.
As a leper, Hemamali wandered the forests until he met the sage Markandeya, to whom he narrated his plight. The sage advised him to observe the fast of Yogini Ekadashi, which falls in the month of Ashadha. Hemamali faithfully followed the sage’s advice and observed the fast with devotion. As a result, he was freed from the curse of leprosy, restored to his former health, and eventually reunited with his wife.
